Letter to Colonel Thomas L. Kane, 1858, October 22.

Photostat of a letter from Brigham Young to Colonel Thomas L. Kane in Philadelphia. Young writes that many of the Mormons who had moved south during the Utah War have returned home, but that the Army presence in the area had led to "scenes of profanity" and drunkenness in the streets. Young also laments the fact that his request for the removal of Hunt, Craig, Morrell, and other Army captains has gone ignored. He writes extensively of the "unjust and illegal annulling" of Hiram Kimball's mail contract, and gives a brief history of the postal service in Utah and the debts owed to Kimball from the United States Post Office.

1 letter, photostat.
